How to save money when shipping? Just as with production the shipping industry also supports saving from economies of scale. In other words, the bigger the quantity of the cargo the smaller the cost per unit.

20 eurosLet’s say you want to ship from Germany to Sweden and you want to transport one pallet of goods. This would normally cost around 140 EUR. On the other hand a full-truck-load (FTL) will cost 1 790 EUR. A truck has the capacity of up to 33 pallets, which equals a shipping cost of 1 790 EUR. This makes the cost of a single pallet only 54.2 EUR. On the other hand if you want to transport 33 pallets separately it will cost you 140 EUR x 33 pallets = 4 620 EUR. That is a difference of 2 830 EUR!

Economies of scale is not only achieved with FTL, but also with container shipping. And you will save already when shipping two pallets at a time. Therefore, try to combine your shipments and send bigger quantities at a time.

Even though the calculation is based on today’s prices the ratio still stays more or less the same, so reconsider your shipping habits.
